Diagnostic reasoning

Why the diagnostic path matters more than the final repair alone

A practical guide to recording diagnostic reasoning, measurements, ruled-out causes, definitive tests, and verification in a useful repair record.

A part name cannot explain a diagnosis

A record that says only which component was replaced cannot show whether the repair was supported by evidence. The valuable portion is the sequence that moved the job from a complaint to a confirmed cause.

Capture evidence in the order it changed the job

Good diagnostic memory keeps observations and conclusions separate. It records what was measured, under what conditions, what each test ruled out, and which definitive test justified condemning a component or isolating a circuit fault.

  • Technician observations
  • Measurements and operating conditions
  • Tests and results
  • Confirmed facts versus assumptions
  • Final verification after repair

Make the record easy to create

Technicians should not have to complete a long generic form after every job. DiagDex starts with the repair story you already wrote, asks only for important missing details, then produces a story that remains editable until you approve it.
